Gonet-Médeville Théophile
2008. Barrel-fermented. 11 years on lees. Still fresh as a daisy.
LEGENDARY
Mystic-Driven · Vintage 2008 · Grand Cru
Producer
Gonet-Médeville farms Grand Cru vineyards in both the Côte des Blancs (Le Mesnil) and the Montagne de Reims (Ambonnay) — a rare combination that gives their vintage Champagnes an unusual depth and complexity. Théophile is their prestige cuvée: barrel-fermented, extended lees aging, no compromises.
✨ Mystic· 🌅 Dawn
Mystic primary — eleven years of lees aging followed by two years of cork aging is a transformation so profound that the resulting wine bears little resemblance to anything produced by conventional Champagne methods. This is time as an ingredient. Dawn secondary — the precision of barrel fermentation and the deliberate craft of Gonet-Médeville's approach gives this wine structure and elegance that matches its remarkable age.
Tasting note
Barrel-fermented, then eleven years on lees followed by two years of cork-age aging. Still fresh as a daisy. The 2008 vintage in Champagne produced wines of extraordinary structure and longevity. From Le Mesnil Champ d'Alouette and Ambonnay Grand Ruelles — two great and classic Grand Cru sites. Super-structured, tons of drive, superb palate intensity.

This is a brilliant 2008 that’s super-structured, with tons of drive and superb palate intensity.

This wine has been barrel-fermented then aged on lees for 11 years followed by a "marrying" time of 2 years with cork age...and it's still as fresh as a daisy!
This magical blend comes from (40%) Le Mesnil Champ d'Alouette site and (60%) Ambonnay Grand Ruelles, both of course, great and classic Grand Crus.
This, as with the Champ d'Alouette is fermented in used barrels and aged for an eternity (11 years) in bottle.
It's a dialed up intense wine with great vinosity, pinot meatiness and "sappiness" together with chardonnay lemon compote and  saline / rocky mineral nuances.  With a well judged 2g/L of sugar, it's a striking beautifully (partially) aged and vinous wine.

***

Julie and Xavier Gonet-Médeville are, in many ways, the first couple of French wines. Both hail from storied winemaking families: Julie's family is famous for its incomparable Château Gilette, and Xavier comes from a long line of Champagne growers in Le Mesnil. Leading a new generation of winemakers, they bring their family knowledge, methods and passion to the many wines they now make together.

In 2000, when his family's plots in Champagne were being divided, Xavier opted for a modest collection of the highest quality 1er and Grand Cru vineyards with a goal of producing only the most exquisite, small-production Champagnes. Champagne Gonet-Médeville's Pinot Noir (1er Cru Bisseuil and Grand Cru Ambonnay) and Chardonnay (Grand Cru Mesnil-Sur-Oger) are farmed organically, and each parcel is vinified separately to emphasize its individual terroir. There is no chaptalization, malolactic fermentation, or fining, and dosage is minute. The wines are matured for a minimum of two years before release.
